- Greyfriars Vineyards
Greyfriars Vineyard was first planted in the Surrey Hills in 1989 and has been producing great grapes and wines for over 20 years.
The current owners, Mike and Hilary Wagstaff, took over in 2010 (the same year as Hampton Cheese and Wine Company was founded), with the aim of expanding the vineyard, building a state of the art winery, cellar and tasting room and producing stunning quality English sparkling wines.
They have planted over 30 acres of new vines, predominantly the three classic Champagne grape varieties; Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. This has enabled them to create a small range of spectacular Engish sparkling wines reflecting the unique local soil conditions, climate and terroir of the Surrey Hills.
By the end of the decade, they will be producing over 100,000 bottles annually including this excellent Sparkling Fumé.
The Sparkling Fumé is made from 100% sauvignon blanc grapes from a single vintage grown at Lansdowne vineyard, an existing 4 hectare vineyard at Shere in the Surrey Hills managed by Greyfriars Vineyard.
2012 was a very challenging year for all English wine producers. As a result they had microscopic yields of grapes requiring a lot of hard work in the vineyard and winery.
The grapes were lovingly handpicked in the last week of October and fermented entirely in used oak barriques and aged for 6 months.
